Nigerian filmmaker Kaelo Iyizoba has made history at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival after his short film The Spectacular Death of Prisca received an Honourable Mention for Best International Short Film.
The recognition marks the first time a Nigerian short film has received the honour at TIFF, according to reports on the filmmaker's achievement. The production was also the only African film in this year's festival lineup.
Rita Dominic Leads the Cast
The film stars veteran Nigerian actress Rita Dominic as Madame P, a woman whose daughter's wedding becomes the setting for an imaginative journey into the exaggerated world of old Nollywood.
Iyizoba describes the project as a homage to the Nigerian films that shaped his early relationship with cinema, while using the story to explore identity and the expectations placed on women.
A Short Film With a Bigger Ambition
The Spectacular Death of Prisca was developed not only as a standalone short but also as a proof of concept for a feature-length project Iyizoba has been developing.
The filmmaker said the TIFF recognition has encouraged him to pursue opportunities that can create more space for Nigerian and African filmmakers internationally.

The TIFF honour adds another international festival milestone to the growing visibility of Nigerian filmmakers and actors.
