Russia and Ukraine exchanged deadly overnight attacks on Tuesday as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to New York for high-level diplomatic meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The latest strikes came as Zelenskyy prepared to meet US President Donald Trump, with Ukraine seeking additional international support and renewed diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s more than four-year full-scale invasion.
Russian Strikes Hit Ukrainian Regions
Russian forces launched missiles and drones against at least four Ukrainian regions overnight, Ukrainian officials said.
The attacks killed four civilians, according to the Associated Press, while damage was reported in several locations. Russia said its strikes were directed at Ukrainian military production facilities, including sites involved in missile and ammunition manufacturing.
The continued attacks come despite repeated international diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a pathway toward a ceasefire.
Ukraine Strikes Russian Energy Infrastructure
Ukraine, meanwhile, carried out another long-range attack inside Russia, damaging an oil refinery in the Samara region.
The Ukrainian side said the facility is important to Russia’s fuel supply. Russian authorities reported that one person was killed in the attack and said hundreds of Ukrainian drones had been intercepted or destroyed across several Russian regions and Crimea.

Zelenskyy Heads to New York
Zelenskyy’s visit to the United States comes as nearly 130 heads of state and government gather in New York for the opening of the 81st UN General Assembly general debate.
Ukraine is seeking continued international backing, including additional air-defence equipment and diplomatic pressure on Moscow. Zelenskyy has also promoted proposals for temporary arrangements covering attacks on energy infrastructure and maritime areas.
French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged additional radar systems intended to strengthen protection of Ukraine’s power infrastructure.
Trump Meetings Draw Global Attention
Trump’s schedule at the UN includes meetings with Zelenskyy and numerous other world leaders as conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East dominate the diplomatic agenda.
Reuters reported that Trump is due to hold at least 11 bilateral or group meetings on Tuesday, including discussions with European and Gulf leaders.
The meetings come against a broader backdrop of continuing international disputes over the wars in Ukraine and Iran, energy security and the future of global alliances.
UN General Assembly Opens
The 81st UN General Assembly general debate officially opened on September 22 and will continue through September 26 before resuming on September 28.
The session brings together representatives of all 193 UN member states, with the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, artificial intelligence, climate change and the UN’s financial challenges among the major issues expected to feature in discussions.
War Remains Central International Issue
The latest battlefield exchanges demonstrate that the military conflict remains active even as diplomatic efforts continue.
With Zelenskyy engaging world leaders in New York and Trump holding a series of bilateral meetings, attention is again turning to whether international diplomacy can produce concrete measures to reduce hostilities.
For Ukraine, the immediate priorities remain air-defence support, protection of critical infrastructure and international backing for negotiations. Russia continues to maintain that its military operations are directed at Ukrainian military targets.
